چکیده

Collision avoidance is critical for the performance of contentionbased medium access mechanism such as CSMA. In this paper, the IEEE 802.11-based MAC protocol is enhanced for performance improvements in multi-hop ad-hoc wireless networks. The protocol behavior of hidden terminals in carrier sensing range[10] is important for end-to-end performance. There are several mechanisms defined in IEEE 802.11 standard such as IFS(Inter Frame Space), but we address a problem that such time interval is not long enough to avoid unnecessary collisions by the hidden terminals in carrier sensing range. We have conducted a comprehensive simulation to study performance improvement. The simulation results indicate that the performance is increased and the number of the dropped packets due to unnecessary collisions can be significantly reduced as much as a half. Keywords—Ad-hoc wireless networks, IEEE 802.11, MAC, Collision, CAI(Collision Avoidance Interval)

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...

Does IEEE 802.11 MAC Protocol Work Well in Multi-hop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks?

IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is the standard for wireless LANs, it is widely used in testbeds and simulations in the research for wireless multi-hop ad hoc networks. However, this protocol was not designed for multi-hop networks. Although it can support some ad hoc network architecture, it is not intended to support the wireless mobile ad hoc network, in which multi-hop connectivity is one of the m...

IEEE 802.11 over multi-hop wireless networks: problems and new perspectives

The distributed coordination function (DCF) mode of the IEEE 802.11 MAC standard, though proposed for medium access in wireless local area networks, is seen as the de-facto medium access standard in multi-hop wireless networks. In this paper we contend that the unique characteristics that differentiate multi-hop wireless ad-hoc networks from local area wireless networks render the IEEE 802.11 M...

Throughput Improvement in Wireless Multi-Hop Ad-Hoc Networks Using Load Control

IEEE 802.11 MAC is the most commonly used protocol in multi-hop ad-hoc networks which need no infrastructure. In multi-hop ad-hoc networks based on IEEE 802.11, since nodes try transmitting their packets at every possible slot, there is a high packet loss probability. This degrades network performance attributes such as throughput and fairness. In this paper, we focus on achieving the maximum t...
